CENTER RING: Missouri 4-H and FFA members will take to the show ring starting this week. They will compete for top honors in their species. Along the way, they will likely interact with fairgoers sharing Missouri’s ag story.
4-H, FFA, farm families and commodity groups all take part in ag education at the fair.

The Missouri State Fair will open its gates Aug. 11 and show off the best of Missouri agriculture.

4-H and FFA members, along with their families, will compete in livestock show arenas spread across the fairgrounds. And while fairgoers will have the opportunity to view the action, fair officials say that the Missouri State Fair offers enhanced agriculture education opportunities during the 11-day event.

Fairgoers can become immersed in agriculture around every corner. There are fun and interactive events, exhibits, competitions and shows that take place throughout the Aug. 11-21 fair, aimed to keep Missouri’s No. 1 industry at the forefront.

The Agriculture Building is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 11-20, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 21. The building is the showcase for all the great things that make agriculture Missouri’s No. 1 industry. The Missouri Department of Agriculture and Missouri farmers, ranchers and commodity groups offer kid-friendly, hands-on interaction with agriculture every day.

Highlights of the Agriculture Building include the Missouri Grown Market. It offers fresh and nutritious products grown in the Show-Me State available for purchase daily. AgVenture is an agriculture education booth that offers opportunities to celebrate the history of Missouri agriculture. Live plants, crops and produce showing Missouri’s top commodities will also be on display.

Demonstrations take place at various locations throughout the fair that offer agriculture education to all fairgoers. Demonstrations on cured hams and bacon will take place in the Agriculture Building.

Other various demonstrations will be taking place on the Consumer Showcase Stage in the Home Economics Building. Food demonstrations presented by University of Missouri Extension will take place in the Mo-Ag Theatre. A canned food exhibit, sponsored by Woods Supermarket, will be on display in the Agriculture Building to promote the Drive to Feed Kids.

Missouri 4-H and FFA youth will be on hand to participate in Let’s Talk Livestock, which gives fairgoers an opportunity to talk with exhibitors about their projects and learn more about them. It showcases showmanship, animal care and more with demonstrations by the exhibitors with their livestock sponsored by Tractor Supply Co.

Ag youth also host Barnyard Story Time, located at the Children’s Barnyard, at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 12-20. This offers young fairgoers a chance to take a seat and listen to an agriculture storybook read by a fair exhibitor or agriculture leader.
