The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Rancher’s Leasing Workshop Team recently received the Outstanding Extension Program Award for Project at the Western Agricultural Economics Association, WAEA, virtual awards ceremony.
Workshop team members include AgriLife Extension personnel Tiffany Dowell Lashmet, agriculture law specialist, Amarillo; and of College Station, Greg Kaase, agricultural economist and risk management specialist, and Emmy Kiphen, program specialist.
"We are honored to have received this recognition by our peers," Lashmet said. "We really believe in the impact the Rancher's Leasing Workshop has made for attendees and enjoy the chance to interact with Texas landowners and ag producers."
WAEA includes over 600 members, primarily from the western U.S. and Canada, who are professional economists working in academic institutions, government agencies and departments, private industry and agribusiness, and non-governmental organizations, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife press release. Award nominees must be actively involved in programs of informal education for audiences external to the university.
In 2016, the Rancher’s Leasing Workshop Team began to draft a handbook and design workshop content to educate both landowners and lessees about legal and economic issues related to grazing, hunting and livestock leases, according to the nomination. The team has held 19 workshops with 1,200 attendees.
Topics covered in the Rancher's Leasing Workshop include:
- The basics of a written agricultural lease
- The most common lease arrangements and payment structures
- Possible terms included in an agricultural lease relating to termination
- Resources for choosing a lease rate
- Possible limitations included in a lease
- Common lease terms related to mineral estates
- Specific considerations for a hunting lease
- The importance of liability coverage and insurance for an agricultural lease
Due to strong demand, Lashmet said the workshop is also now available online. The cost is $75 and includes a downloadable copy of the Rancher’s Agricultural Leasing Handbook, which contains checklists and sample lease language. A hard copy is available for $25.
