Tackling a challenging soybean pest

The Around Farm Progress podcast looks at the soybean cyst nematode, and ways farmers can keep this yield-robber at bay.

Do you have a soybean field that for some reason never quite yields as you like? Or do you have yellowing patches across your soybean fields where you’re getting a definite yield loss? Both can be the result of infestations of soybean cyst nematode, an insidious pest that once present is hard to bea.

Recently, Pioneer released information from a survey of 600 farmers, and the company also conducted field sampling research for the pest. To get a better idea of what they found, Farm Progress talked with Mary Gumz, agronomy science manager, at Pioneer to learn more.

During this podcast discussion, Gumz offers insight into resistance management, tactics to push down populations and how new tools can help farmers preserve and improve yields.

For example, in the 2021 agronomic study Gumz coordinated 27% of fields sampled had nematode population levels capable of causing heavy to severe crop damage. Most soybean growers now have nematode populations in their fields, testing to learn the level can give you a leg up on managing the pest. Gumz points out that once present the population never goes completely a way, but there are tactics that work to help maintain solid soybean yields.
